Portrait of a Man, called condottiere

Antonello da Messina Β· 1475

Why it's great

A scarred man with a bold stare and a bristling haircut looks right at you. Antonello da Messina painted it in about 1475, and the name Condottiere means a leader of mercenary soldiers, but nobody knows who he really was.
