Portrait of Giovanna Tornabuoni
Domenico Ghirlandaio Β· 1480
Why it's great
A young woman in a beautiful dress stands in profile in front of a shelf with a book and a jewel. Domenico Ghirlandaio painted her in 1488. She died in childbirth soon after, and a poem on the wall says that art could capture her face but not her soul.

Domenico Ghirlandaio was a Florentine painter born in 1448. He painted busy, lively frescoes of Bible stories set in Florence with its real people, and he ran a big workshop that included the young Michelangelo. He died in 1494.
