Man with a Roman coin

Hans Memling Β· 1473

Why it's great

A man in black holds up a coin from ancient Rome, with a palm tree and a landscape behind him. Hans Memling painted him in about 1473, and the coin shows the emperor Nero. It is thought to be Bernardo Bembo, a Venetian diplomat.
