Christ at the Column
Antonello da Messina Β· 1477
Why it's great
Christ stands with a rope around his neck and a crown of thorns, and a single tear runs down his cheek. Antonello da Messina painted it in 1477, and the sad, gentle face is very powerful for such a small picture.
