Why it's great
Christ hangs on the cross while Mary, John the Baptist, John the Evangelist and Saint Francis stand around. Paolo Uccello painted it in about 1460, with sharp colors and strange, flat figures.

Paolo Uccello was a Florentine painter born in about 1397. He was so crazy about the new science of perspective that he filled his pictures with lances, broken spears and tiled floors that line up to a point. He died in 1475.
