Adoration of the Shepherds
Andrea Mantegna Β· 1450
Why it's great
The shepherds kneel in a rocky landscape to see the baby Jesus, in a picture with sharp, strong lines. Andrea Mantegna painted it in about 1450, and it looks almost like a carved relief.

Andrea Mantegna was an Italian painter born in 1431 and was the court painter to the Gonzaga family in Mantua. His sharply drawn, statue-like figures and bold use of perspective were studied by many painters, including his brother-in-law Giovanni Bellini. He died in 1506.
