Filippo Lippi Β· 1450
Why it's great
The angel Gabriel kneels before Mary in a garden and a courtyard painted in clear perspective. Filippo Lippi painted this in about 1450, and the lilies mean that Mary is pure.

Filippo Lippi was a Florentine painter born in 1406, who was a Carmelite friar for much of his life. He painted tender Madonnas with real, lovely faces, and his son Filippino also became a painter. He died in Spoleto in 1469.
