Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
One of the largest art museums in the United States, with huge collections of Egyptian, Greek and Asian art and a famous collection of American paintings by Copley, Sargent and Homer. It also has one of the largest collections of Monet outside France.
History of the museum
The MFA was founded in 1870, the same year as the Met, by Boston citizens, and opened in 1876 in Copley Square. By the 1900s it had outgrown its building and moved to its current home on Huntington Avenue in 1909. It has long sent archaeologists abroad, so its Egyptian collection is one of the best outside Cairo.
