Montreal Museum of Fine Arts
Canada's oldest art museum is made of several linked buildings on Sherbrooke Street in Montreal, with Canadian, European, Indigenous and decorative art, including some of the best Quebec paintings.
History of the museum
The Art Association of Montreal was founded in 1860, making it the oldest art museum in Canada, and it opened its first gallery building on Phillips Square in 1879. The marble Beaux-Arts building on Sherbrooke Street opened in 1912, and several pavilions have been added since. It became known for large exhibitions, and its education programs for children and for people who are ill are well known.
