Autumn Landscape
Cornelius Krieghoff · 1858
Why it's great
A forest is ablaze with red, orange and gold leaves beside a calm stream. Cornelius Krieghoff painted the glorious color of Canadian autumn, which became a favorite subject. The warm colors make the picture glow. It's a good example of his love of the Canadian landscape.

Cornelius Krieghoff was born in Amsterdam and moved to North America as a young man. He lived in Montreal and Quebec, where he painted lively scenes of French-Canadian farm life and winter. His humorous pictures made him one of Canada's most popular painters. He died in Chicago in 1872.
