Canoe on the River
Cornelius Krieghoff Β· 1865
Why it's great
A small round painting shows a quiet river framed by trees in glowing autumn colors. Cornelius Krieghoff painted the glorious color of the Canadian fall, which became a favorite subject. The round shape makes it feel like looking through a window. It's a peaceful picture of autumn.

Cornelius Krieghoff was born in Amsterdam and moved to North America as a young man. He lived in Montreal and Quebec, where he painted lively scenes of French-Canadian farm life and winter. His humorous pictures made him one of Canada's most popular painters. He died in Chicago in 1872.
