The Tempest

Peder Balke Β· 1862

Why it's great

Big waves crash under a sky of dark clouds in a moody, simple seascape. Peder Balke painted the rough seas of the north with a few strong brushstrokes. His art was forgotten for years, then rediscovered. It's a very modern-looking painting for 1862.
