Stetind in Fog
Peder Balke Β· 1864
Why it's great
A huge mountain emerges from a thick fog above a calm, dark fjord, in an eerie light. Peder Balke, a Norwegian painter, used just a few strokes. The shape of the Stetind rises like a monument. It's a spare and powerful image.

Peder Balke was born on an island in Norway and became a painter who started out as a house painter. He traveled to Norway's far north and painted bold, simple pictures of the sea and mountains. His work went unnoticed in his lifetime but is admired today. He died in Christiania (Oslo) in 1887.
