Lighthouse on the Norwegian Coast
Peder Balke Β· 1850
Why it's great
A lighthouse shines through a night sky on a rough coast, with waves and dark clouds. Peder Balke painted dramatic seascapes of northern Norway in quick, bold strokes. He was little known in his lifetime, but today he is seen as a brilliant artist. It's a moody and powerful picture.

Peder Balke was born on an island in Norway and became a painter who started out as a house painter. He traveled to Norway's far north and painted bold, simple pictures of the sea and mountains. His work went unnoticed in his lifetime but is admired today. He died in Christiania (Oslo) in 1887.
