Nasjonalmuseet (National Museum, Oslo)
Norway's national museum, the largest art museum in the Nordic countries, opened a vast new building on the Oslo waterfront in 2022. It has Munch's The Scream and the best paintings of Norway's fjords, mountains and troll tales.
History of the museum
Norway founded its national gallery in 1837, soon after it became independent of Denmark in 1814, in order to show the new nation's art and culture. The collection was housed in several places. In 2022 the National Museum opened in a new building by the architect Klaus Schuwerk, on the harbor in Oslo, merging four museums into one, and it is the biggest museum building in the Nordic region.
