Nationalmuseum
Sweden's national museum of art holds Rembrandt, Rubens, the Swedish painters Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn, and a famous Scandinavian design collection, in a Renaissance-style palace by the water.
History of the museum
The Swedish king Gustav III opened the royal collection to the public as the Royal Museum in 1792, and the present building on Blasieholmen, designed by the German architect Friedrich August Stüler, opened in 1866. In 2018 it reopened after a five-year renovation. Carl Larsson's giant mural Midwinter Sacrifice was painted for its stairway in 1915.
