Mother Anthony's Tavern

Pierre-Auguste Renoir · 1866

Why it's great

Artist friends sit around a table in a village inn, talking and relaxing, as a waitress clears the table. Renoir painted his friends, including the painter Alfred Sisley. A dog sleeps on the floor. It's a warm group portrait of friendship.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France, and started his working life painting designs on porcelain. In Paris he became a founding Impressionist, famous for glowing scenes of friends, dancing, and sunshine.
