Dance in the City
Pierre-Auguste Renoir · 1883
Why it's great
A man in a dark suit sweeps a woman in a long white ballgown across the dance floor, tropical plants behind them. Renoir painted this as a companion to his country dance painting, contrasting the formal and the casual. The woman is Suzanne Valadon, who became a famous painter. It's a chic image of city life.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France, and started his working life painting designs on porcelain. In Paris he became a founding Impressionist, famous for glowing scenes of friends, dancing, and sunshine. Later in life he lived in the warm south of France, and he kept painting even when arthritis twisted his hands, with a brush strapped to his fingers. He left thousands of cheerful paintings.
