Dance in the Country
Pierre-Auguste Renoir · 1883
Why it's great
A smiling woman in a pink dress and straw hat twirls with a man in a straw boater, in a crowd of happy dancers. Renoir's wife Aline, who was his model, appears in one of the dance scenes. He painted it as a companion to the city dance scene. It's a joyous moment.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France, and started his working life painting designs on porcelain. In Paris he became a founding Impressionist, famous for glowing scenes of friends, dancing, and sunshine. Later in life he lived in the warm south of France, and he kept painting even when arthritis twisted his hands, with a brush strapped to his fingers. He left thousands of cheerful paintings.
