Two Sisters
Pierre-Auguste Renoir · 1881
Why it's great
Two girls in fancy hats and dresses sit on a terrace beside the Seine in Chatou, one holding a ball of wool. Renoir loved painting young people, and this one glows with soft red and green. It's also known as 'On the Terrace.' It was one of his big successes.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France, and started his working life painting designs on porcelain. In Paris he became a founding Impressionist, famous for glowing scenes of friends, dancing, and sunshine. Later in life he lived in the warm south of France, and he kept painting even when arthritis twisted his hands, with a brush strapped to his fingers. He left thousands of cheerful paintings.
