Pink and Blue

Pierre-Auguste Renoir · 1881

Why it's great

Two sisters in pink and blue dresses stand side by side, smiling softly. Renoir painted the daughters of a Parisian banker, Alice and Elisabeth Cahen d'Anvers. The soft colors and curls give them a sweet charm. It's a very sweet double portrait.

About the artist

Pierre-Auguste Renoir

1841–1919 · born in Limoges · died in Cagnes-sur-Mer

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France, and started his working life painting designs on porcelain. In Paris he became a founding Impressionist, famous for glowing scenes of friends, dancing, and sunshine. Later in life he lived in the warm south of France, and he kept painting even when arthritis twisted his hands, with a brush strapped to his fingers. He left thousands of cheerful paintings.
