Hansen 'Ole Peter' Balling Β· 1881
Why it's great
The 21st president of the United States, Chester A. Arthur, sits for a formal portrait with a calm, serious expression. Ole Peter Hansen Balling was a Norwegian-born painter who moved to America and painted famous Americans. His portraits tell us how both countries are connected. It's an interesting piece of Norwegian-American art.
