Ulysses S. Grant
Hansen 'Ole Peter' Balling Β· 1865
Why it's great
A general with a beard and a serious look stands in uniform. Ulysses S. Grant led the Union army in the American Civil War and later became the 18th president of the United States. This portrait was painted by Ole Peter Hansen Balling, a Norwegian-born painter who fought in the Civil War himself. It's a link between Norway and American history.
