Mlle Irene Cahen d'Anvers

Pierre-Auguste Renoir · 1880

Why it's great

A girl with long red hair and bright blue eyes sits in a luxurious blue-and-white dress. Renoir painted her when she was eight, the daughter of a rich banker. Her family wasn't pleased with the picture and hung it in a back hall. Today it's treasured as one of his best portraits.

About the artist

Pierre-Auguste Renoir

1841–1919 · born in Limoges · died in Cagnes-sur-Mer

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France, and started his working life painting designs on porcelain. In Paris he became a founding Impressionist, famous for glowing scenes of friends, dancing, and sunshine. Later in life he lived in the warm south of France, and he kept painting even when arthritis twisted his hands, with a brush strapped to his fingers. He left thousands of cheerful paintings.
