Woman with a Pearl Necklace in a Loge
Mary Cassatt · 1879
Why it's great
A woman in a pale dress with a pearl necklace sits in a theater box, leaning forward and holding a fan. Cassatt painted this for the 1879 Impressionist show, with the glow of the theater lamps. She looks across at the audience while being observed herself. It's a picture of a woman who is clever and independent.

Mary Cassatt was born near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and moved to Paris as a young woman. She was the only American to join the French Impressionists, and she specialized in tender pictures of mothers and children. She lived in France most of her life, and she also encouraged American collectors to buy Impressionist art. She died at her country home in France in 1926.
