The Boating Party
Mary Cassatt Β· 1893
Why it's great
A woman and a baby sit in the stern of a boat with a boatman rowing, over bright blue water, with a big yellow sail. Cassatt was inspired by Japanese woodblock prints. The flat shapes and bold colors make it a favorite. It's a joyful family scene.

Mary Cassatt was born near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and moved to Paris as a young woman. She was the only American to join the French Impressionists, and she specialized in tender pictures of mothers and children. She lived in France most of her life, and she also encouraged American collectors to buy Impressionist art. She died at her country home in France in 1926.
