Self-portrait with hat
Paul Gauguin · 1893
Why it's great
Gauguin looks out wearing a hat and a blue coat, a cool, serious expression on his face, against a plain background. He painted this after returning from Tahiti. The strong shapes and calm color are typical of his style. It's a confident look.

Paul Gauguin was born in Paris and spent part of childhood in Peru. He worked as a stockbroker before turning to painting full-time. He lived in Brittany, in Arles with Van Gogh, and then in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands in the South Pacific, seeking a simpler life. His flat, vivid colors influenced Picasso and Matisse.
