Burning the Brushwood

Eero Järnefelt · 1893

Why it's great

A woman and a child tend a fire of brush in a field in Finland, with smoke curling up in the evening light. Eero Järnefelt painted this in 1893, showing traditional slash-and-burn farming. It is one of Finland's best-loved paintings. The glowing smoke and soft sky are lovely.
