Fox Hunt
Winslow Homer Β· 1893
Why it's great
A fox runs across a deep snowy field while a flock of hungry crows swoops down to attack it. Winslow Homer painted this in 1893 at his home on the coast of Maine. The winter scene is both beautiful and harsh. It's one of the most dramatic animal paintings in American art.

Winslow Homer was born in Boston and became one of America's greatest painters. He started as an illustrator and covered the Civil War for a magazine. Later, he lived on the rocky coast of Maine, where he painted the sea, fishermen and storms. He died at his home at Prouts Neck in 1910.
