Breezing Up
Winslow Homer · 1873
Why it's great
Four people in a small sailboat lean back as the wind fills the sails and the boat dashes across a sparkling sea, with a few clouds. Winslow Homer, one of America's greatest painters, painted this in 1876 (originally called 'A Fair Wind'). The fresh air and speed feel real. It's one of the best-loved American paintings.

Winslow Homer was born in Boston and became one of America's greatest painters. He started as an illustrator and covered the Civil War for a magazine. Later, he lived on the rocky coast of Maine, where he painted the sea, fishermen and storms. He died at his home at Prouts Neck in 1910.
