The Cup of Tea
Mary Cassatt Β· 1880
Why it's great
A woman in a white and blue hat sits with a teacup in her hand, in a room with patterned wallpaper. Cassatt painted her mother, Lydia, relaxing at home. The quiet, everyday scene is full of charm. It's a lovely picture.

Mary Cassatt was born near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and moved to Paris as a young woman. She was the only American to join the French Impressionists, and she specialized in tender pictures of mothers and children. She lived in France most of her life, and she also encouraged American collectors to buy Impressionist art. She died at her country home in France in 1926.
