Summer's Day
Berthe Morisot · 1879
Why it's great
A woman and a young girl are in a rowboat on a lake in a park, in soft daylight. Berthe Morisot painted it with light, quick strokes. It's one of her best-known paintings. It's a peaceful moment.

Berthe Morisot was born in Bourges, France, and studied painting with Corot. She exhibited in the first Impressionist show in 1874 and was one of the movement's leading figures. She married Eugène Manet, the brother of Édouard Manet, and lived in Paris. She painted women, children and gardens with a light, fresh touch.
