Religious Procession in Kursk Province
Ilya Repin Β· 1880
Why it's great
A huge crowd of people, rich and poor, follow a sacred icon down a dusty road under a hot sun. Repin painted hundreds of figures, and each one has a different face and story. The painting took him years, and he traveled to villages for sketches. It's a panorama of 19th-century Russia.

Ilya Repin was born in a small town in Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire. He trained in Saint Petersburg and traveled to Paris before becoming Russia's most celebrated realist painter. He lived much of his later life in a country house near the Finnish border, now a museum. His huge paintings of people, history, and ordinary life made him a national treasure.
