Peasant Burial
Erik Werenskiold Β· 1880
Why it's great
Villagers carry a coffin through a snowy countryside, with mourners following in a long line. Erik Werenskiold, a Norwegian painter, painted this to show real Norwegian farm life without prettiness. It was celebrated as one of the first truly Norwegian paintings. It's a serious, moving picture.
