Ceremonial Sitting of the State Council on 7 May 1901 Marking the Centenary of its Foundation
Ilya Repin · 1903
Why it's great
Dozens of officials in uniform sit and stand in a vast hall, in a massive group portrait for the 100th anniversary of Russia's State Council. Repin painted 81 individual portraits with the help of his students. It's a record-setting giant canvas, over 4 meters tall. It's a window into a world that was about to vanish.

Ilya Repin was born in a small town in Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire. He trained in Saint Petersburg and traveled to Paris before becoming Russia's most celebrated realist painter. He lived much of his later life in a country house near the Finnish border, now a museum. His huge paintings of people, history, and ordinary life made him a national treasure.
