Jewess with Oranges
Aleksander Gierymski Β· 1880
Why it's great
A woman in a shawl and dress sits with a basket of oranges on her lap, selling fruit in Warsaw. Gierymski painted her with great care and sympathy. It was a rare picture that gave a poor street vendor the dignity of a portrait. It's one of the most beloved Polish paintings.
