Madame Georges Charpentier and her Children
Pierre-Auguste Renoir · 1878
Why it's great
A wealthy publisher's wife sits with her young son and daughter, and a large dog on a couch, in a room with Japanese decor. Renoir's painting won him new patrons when it was well received at the Salon. It's fabulously cozy. It's a portrait of a stylish Paris family.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France, and started his working life painting designs on porcelain. In Paris he became a founding Impressionist, famous for glowing scenes of friends, dancing, and sunshine. Later in life he lived in the warm south of France, and he kept painting even when arthritis twisted his hands, with a brush strapped to his fingers. He left thousands of cheerful paintings.
