La loge

Pierre-Auguste Renoir · 1874

Why it's great

A stylish couple sits in a theater box, but the woman in her striped gown is looking out at the audience while the man peers up through binoculars. Renoir painted it in 1874 and showed it at the first Impressionist exhibition. It sparkles with black, white and pearly pink. It's loved for its elegance and its sense of being seen.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France, and started his working life painting designs on porcelain. In Paris he became a founding Impressionist, famous for glowing scenes of friends, dancing, and sunshine. Later in life he lived in the warm south of France, and he kept painting even when arthritis twisted his hands, with a brush strapped to his fingers. He left thousands of cheerful paintings.
