The Courtauld Gallery
A small gallery in Somerset House with one of the most beautiful collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings in the world, including Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergère and Van Gogh's Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear.
History of the museum
The textile businessman Samuel Courtauld bought Impressionist paintings when they were still unpopular in Britain and, in 1932, helped to found the Courtauld Institute of Art to study art history. He gave his collection to the institute. Since 1989 the gallery has been in Somerset House, a grand building by the Thames, and it reopened after a big renovation in 2021.
