Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
A grand Victorian museum in the heart of Birmingham, which has one of the world's best collections of Pre-Raphaelite paintings, and also the Staffordshire Hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold.
History of the museum
The museum opened in 1885 in a splendid building in Chamberlain Square, paid for with Victorian city money. Its Pre-Raphaelite collection grew because the city's own artists, including Edward Burne-Jones, born in Birmingham, were admired locally. In 2009 the Staffordshire Hoard, the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found, was discovered and brought here.
