Tate Modern
A giant former power station on the Thames, with a tall brick chimney, is now one of the world's most popular modern art museums, with a huge hall, called the Turbine Hall, for large installations.
History of the museum
Bankside Power Station was built in the 1940s and 1950s and closed in 1981. The Tate chose it as the home for its collection of international modern art in 1994, and the architects Herzog & de Meuron made it into a museum that opened in 2000. A new building, called the Blavatnik Building, opened in 2016. Free to enter, it receives millions of visitors each year.
