Imperial War Museum London
Britain's national museum of modern war has a very large art collection, including works by official war artists such as John Singer Sargent, Paul Nash and Wyndham Lewis.
History of the museum
The Imperial War Museum was started in 1917 while the First World War was still going on, to record the war for later generations. The government hired top artists as war artists and their work is still the heart of the art collection. It moved in 1936 to a building that was a former hospital for people with mental illness, in Lambeth. Sargent's Gassed hangs here.
