The Wallace Collection
A free museum in a grand house in Manchester Square, packed with French 18th-century painting, porcelain and armor. Its most famous painting is Fragonard's The Swing.
History of the museum
The collection was put together by four generations of the Marquesses of Hertford and by Sir Richard Wallace, who inherited it in 1870. His widow, Lady Wallace, left it to the British nation in 1897 on condition that it be kept in London, and it opened to the public in 1900 in Hertford House.
