Laughing Cavalier
Frans Hals · 1624
Why it's great
A young man in a black hat and richly embroidered sleeves looks out with a sly, half-smile and his arm on his hip. Frans Hals painted it in 1624, and the name Laughing Cavalier was given much later, though he is only slightly smiling.

Frans Hals was a Dutch painter who was born in Antwerp around 1582 and lived most of his life in Haarlem. He painted lively portraits with fast, loose brushstrokes, so his sitters seem to laugh, drink and talk right in front of you. He died in Haarlem in 1666.
