Judith Leyster Β· 1630
Why it's great
A young woman painter sits at her easel with a brush, turns around and grins as a fiddler stands in her picture. Judith Leyster painted herself in about 1630, and she was one of the few women in the Dutch painters' guild.

Judith Leyster was a Dutch painter born in Haarlem in 1609. She painted lively scenes of musicians and everyday people and was one of the few women admitted to the painters' guild. After she died in 1660 her work was mistaken for Frans Hals's until it was rediscovered in the 1890s.
