Merrymakers at Shrovetide

Frans Hals Β· 1610

Why it's great

A group of laughing people sits at a table in costume, with one wearing a fool's hat and another a jester. Frans Hals painted it in about 1615, and the quick brushwork makes them look as if they are laughing right now.

Frans Hals was a Dutch painter who was born in Antwerp around 1582 and lived most of his life in Haarlem. He painted lively portraits with fast, loose brushstrokes, so his sitters seem to laugh, drink and talk right in front of you. He died in Haarlem in 1666.
