Christ in the House of Martha and Mary

Diego Velázquez · 1618

Why it's great

A young kitchen maid, with a mortar and eggs and fish, looks angry while she works, and through a window we see Christ talking with two women. Diego Velázquez painted it in 1618, at age 19, and the kitchen is the real subject.
