The Long Engagement

Arthur Hughes Β· 1859

Why it's great

A young man in a clergyman's coat leans toward a woman, in a woodland, with ivy carved with their initials. Hughes painted a couple who must wait years to marry. The meticulous details of leaves and bark are amazing. It's a touching story.
