Dante Gabriel Rossetti Β· 1859

Why it's great

A farmer on a cart in a city street at dawn finds a young woman who has fallen on hard times, who turns away in shame. Rossetti painted this story of a person's compassion. It's a picture of kindness. He never finished it, but worked on it for years.
