Bilking the Toll

Cornelius Krieghoff Β· 1860

Why it's great

A sleigh speeds away from a tollgate as the toll keeper shouts after it, in a snowy scene full of fun. Cornelius Krieghoff's lively scenes of French-Canadian country life made him one of Canada's most popular painters. It's a funny story told in a picture. It shows his eye for humor.
